BHP universality in sunspot numbers fluctuations

We analyze the famous Wolf’s sunspot numbers. The time series shows a mean period with duration of 133 months. We observed that the mean period consists of two equal sized phases, descendent and ascendent, that can be well fitted by two ortogonal lines. The sunspot numbers standard deviation period is well fitted by a sine function. We discovered that the distribution of the sunspot number fluc...

Universality in DAX index returns fluctuations

In terms of the stock exchange returns, we compute the analytic expression of the probability distributions FDAX,+ and FDAX,− of the normalized positive and negative DAX (Germany) index daily returns r(t). Furthermore, we define the α re-scaled DAX daily index positive returns r(t) and negative returns (−r(t)) that we call, after normalization, the α positive fluctuations and α negative fluctua...

River scaling analysis and the BHP universality hypothesis

The XY-model shows in two dimensions in the strong coupling regime a universal distribution, named BHP, which in turn also describes other models of criticality and self-organized criticality and even describes natural data as river level and flow. We start by analysing the two dimensional XY-model and calculate the BHP probability density function. The results obtained for several dissimilar p...

Origin of the approximate universality of distributions in equilibrium correlated systems

– We propose an interpretation of previous experiments and numerical experiments showing that, for a large class of systems, distributions of global quantities are similar to a distribution originally obtained for the magnetization in the 2D-XY model [1]. This approach, developed for the Ising model, is based on previous numerical observations [8]. We obtain an effective action using a perturba...

Comparing Four Models of Aggregate Fluctuations due to Self-Fulfilling Expectations

This paper compares four equilibrium business cycle models with increasing returns to scale production technologies that allow for aggregate fluctuations due to self-fulfilling expectations. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of stationary sunspot equilibria are derived. Numerical examples demonstrate that the degree of increasing returns necessary for the existence of statio...
